In Altered Beast, the player controls a warrior who has been resurrected and must fight against mythological beings, the undead and the king of the Underworld himself, the Nefarious Neff. It was developed by Sega and originally released on 1988. This Master System’s port is from 1989.

This post will teach you how to get 5 lives on the energy meter, continues, infinite energy, infinite lives, invincibility, activating power-ups and more. There’s also a playthrough video to help you even further.

Then, lets go.

Continues

In this game, you are entitled to 4 continues. Each one is achieved by pressing the d-pad to a different direction, when you lose all your lives and Game Over appears:

  1. The first continue is achieved with the command: upper left diagonal + buttons 1 and 2.
  2. Second: diagonal down left + button 1 and 2.
  3. For the third Continue, press diagonal down right + button 1 and 2.
  4. To get the fourth and last continue, press the upper right diagonal + button 1 and 2.

Five energy bars

To get 2 extra energy bars per life (this having a total of five), you have to press and hold the d-pad in the upper left direction then press Button 1, on the game’s title screen.

Action Replay Codes

The following passwords can give you some neat stuff, but they require the Pro Action Replay, a Game Genie-type device, that is, a device that allows you to activate cheats and/or modify some stops in games. You can activate the following codes in emulators such as Emulicious (Tools > Cheats) and Fusion (File > Game Genie / PAR), if you don’t have the physical peripheral there:

  • 00C0 900C – Endless energy.
  • 00C2 6180 – Permanent invulnerability.
  • 00C0 8F03 – Infinite lives (keeps always showing 3).
  • 00C2 2001 – Activates power-up (enable it just for a short while to avoid crashing the game).

Playthrough

The following video shows the game being finished without losing energy. You may get some further hints by watching that. It’s from the 1UP Retrogaming Longplays channel:

Well, we hope it helps!
