Overview
Excitebike is a motocross racing video game created by Nintendo and released, originally, in 1984 for the Famicom console, the Japanese NES version. It this first game of the Excite series, you have to win a tournament by showing the best results on your motocross bike. What we have here is this is the actual game emulated to be played in your browser (HTML5).
The game was later ported to arcades as VS. Excitebike for the Nintendo VS. System within the same year. In North America, it debuted in arcades in 1985 and was subsequently released as a launch title for the Nintendo Entertainment System, becoming one of the console’s best-selling games.
Excitebike was designed and directed by Shigeru Miyamoto. Its side-scrolling game engine was later used in the development of Super Mario Bros. (1985), enabling Mario to transition smoothly from a walk to a run rather than moving at a constant speed.
This game was a critical and commercial success, leading to several sequels and re-releases on various Nintendo platforms, including the Wii and Wii U Virtual Consoles, and Nintendo Switch Online. It is the first game in the Excite series, known for its 1980s pixel art graphics, and was followed by Excitebike 64 as well as spiritual successors like Excite Truck and Excitebots: Trick Racing.
In Excitebike, you’ll create your own tracks by placing jumps and obstacles of all different sizes and shapes on the track and choosing how many laps each race will have, then race against the clock or other riders to see how your track fares in competition.
Race by yourself against the clock or compete with other motocross riders on 5 tracks full of long straights, large jumps and obstacles to win the Excitebike championship and have fun!
Gameplay
Excitebike is a side-scrolling racing game where you control a motocross racer. It offers two main modes: Selection A, which is a solo race, and Selection B, where the player competes against computer-controlled opponents. The objective is to finish in third place or better in the preliminary race to qualify for the Excitebike championship race.
During the race, the player uses the A button to accelerate the bike and the B button to activate a turbo boost that increases speed. However, prolonged use of the turbo causes the engine to overheat, forcing a cooldown period. The engine’s temperature can be reset by driving over arrows located along the course.
The player controls the bike’s position with the Y-axis of the directional pad and acceleration with the A and B buttons. The bike’s pitch in the air can be adjusted using the X-axis of the directional pad; press left to raise the front and right to lower it. The up and down arrows on the directional pad control the bike’s landing angle.
At the start, the player can choose which track to race on, from 1 to 5. Maintaining balance when landing allows the player to keep speed, while an uneven landing can result in speed loss or even a crash.
Additionally, the game includes a Design Mode, allowing players to create tracks using 19 types of obstacles. Players can save and load their created tracks using the Famicom Data Recorder, an accessory that was not released outside Japan.
