Overview
Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge, also known as Nakajima Satoru Kanshuu F1 Hero MD (中島悟監修 F1 HERO MD) in Japan, is a Formula One video game released in 1992 that features the tracks from the 1991 season if this international racing category. It was developed by System 3 Software and published by Acclaim in North America and Europe, while Coconuts Japan published it in Japan. Endorsed by former F1 pilot Satoru Nakajima, the game was released for the Mega Drive/Genesis, Game Boy, and NES.
In Ferrari Grand Prix Challenge, players take on the role of a Ferrari team driver with the goal of becoming an F1 Champion throughout a 16-round season. Players compete against 25 computer-controlled opponents representing various F1 teams. Each round consists of a qualification race (1 lap) and a main race (5 laps), with the qualification determining the starting position for the main race. Points are awarded based on finishing position in the main race, affecting the player’s standings.
Players can make pit stops during races to change worn tires and refuel, which involves a mini-game. There is also a practice mode where players can select the number of practice laps they wish to complete.
The NES port of the game is a simplified adaptation of the Genesis one, allowing players to practice up to six laps or qualify for every Formula One race using metric units (kilometers per hour). It is noted for its representation of urban tracks, including Circuit Gilles Villeneuve, and features tire wear that necessitates pit stops for maintenance and repairs. The game also includes a communication feature with the crew chief for repair advice. The top speed of the vehicle in the NES version is 335 km/h, and turbo is not used.
Before starting the first qualifying session, players must enter their name (up to 10 characters) and nationality (a 3-character field). The nationality code does not need to correspond to a real country.
Here, we have a NES version that can be played online in a browser (HTML5).
