Overview
Friday the 13th is a survival horror video game developed by Atlus and published by LJN in 1989 for the good ol’ 8-bit NES. It is an adaptation of the Friday the 13th franchise where you have to face the undead serial killer maniac, Jason Voorhees.
Step into the shoes of one of the six counselors at Camp Crystal Lake and try to save as many as you can from the undying Jason’s murderous rampage. Find the children hiding in the cabins and fend off Jason himself.
It’s not going to be easy. You must first fight your way through forests filled with man-eating wolves, caves covered with blood sucking bats and hordes of mindless zombies everywhere you turn. You must also help any friend who is in danger, or else you can just kiss them goodbye. And hiding in a cabin or staying adrift in a canoe won’t keep you safe – Jason will find you anywhere.
The only way to survive this summer is to challenge the relentless maniac face to face, and destroy him.
The days are bright and sunny. The nights are cool and clear. And Jason is on a rampage…
Gameplay
In the Friday the 13th, players take on the role of one of six camp counselors at the infamous Camp Crystal Lake, each with different abilities in speed, rowing, and jumping. The goal is to defeat Jason Voorhees three times over the course of three days and three nights, while defending against attacks from zombies, crows, and wolves that roam the areas around the camp, such as the trails, the lake, and the caves.
The counselors start with stones but can find and use stronger weapons like knives, machetes, and torches—the latter obtained by lighting all the fireplaces in the larger cabins. During the game, an alarm sounds at certain intervals, indicating that Jason has entered a cabin and is attacking another counselor or the children at the camp. Players must rush to the indicated location on the map to confront Jason before he kills their fellow counselors or the children.
Combat with Jason can occur on the trails, in the lake, or inside cabins, where the gameplay resembles the fighting style of the game Punch-Out!!. Jason becomes faster and more dangerous each time his life bar is fully depleted, and the game is only over when all the counselors or children are killed, or when Jason is defeated three times.
