Phantom 2040 [Animated Series]

Overview

Phantom 2040 is a Franco-American animated series that is loosely based on the comic strip superhero The Phantom, created by Lee Falk and first published by himself in February 1936.

Here, we have all its 35 episodes, the 33 original ones plus the first and second season “bridging” compilation episodes Rite of Passage and The World is My Jungle, kindly provided to the Internet by the Comics Kingdom channel.

The central character of the series is Kit Walker, Jr., who said to be the 24th Phantom, and it is set on a dystopian cyberpunk future, where all environmental disasters and the economic Resource Wars from the early 21st century have decimated the fragile ecosystem balance of an Earth once teeming with life.

The plot addresses themes such as the fight against corruption, the impact of technology on society, and the preservation of heroic values. The series’ aesthetic blends a dark and oppressive vision of the future, like the final stages of a cyberpunk society, with themes of survival and resistance, creating an environment that is both futuristic and deteriorated.

Phantom 2040 was well-received by critics and audiences alike, both for its animation and its innovative take on Lee Falk’s hero story. It apparently had only two seasons due to a poor decision by the producers; however, the series has a dedicated cult fan base and is remembered as an interesting and engaging adaptation of a classic character.

A Phantom 2040 video game was produced for Sega Genesis, Game Gear and Super NES, and, like the animated series, received very positive reviews despite its obscurity. It was also was adapted into a comic book series by Marvel Comics in 1995 (cover dated May–August 1995). Only four issues were published, released as a mini-series.

Synopsis

The Purple crusader is back in Phantom 2040 – a brilliantly-animated futuristic version of the popular Lee Falk comic strip that’s been entertaining Phantom fans for over half a century. This series revolves around 18-year old biology student Kit Walker, Jr. who suddenly learns that he must fulfill a family destiny in an unbroken father-to-son line by becoming the 24th Phantom. He’s confused, unready and untested, but no matter what foe he must face-human, machine, or some bizarre combo of both, Kit will not turn his back on history to fight for what is right in a society where human values have been completely lost and to save the world from environmental disaster.
