Overview
Phantom 2040 is an action-adventure metroidvania platformer where the 24th Phantom is set to fight a megacorporation named Maximum Inc. that is threatening the world with an even worse kind of dystopian.
This cyberpunk game from 1995 was based on the great animated series of the same name and was developed by Viacom New Media. Here we have it set to be played online, in your browser (HTML5), the SNES version of this game that was also released to Genesis and Game Gear.
Anyway, in Phantom 2040, the city of Metropia is in total chaos. Crime, smuggling and terrorism are escalating. Maximum developed a biotechnology that is threatening to corrupt nature – causing animal extinction and ecosystem adulteration. The corporation owner, Rebecca Madison, is an evil person who wants to take over Metropia and the world behind a curtain of good intentions. Thankfully, The Phantom, following the proud but secret footsteps of his ancestors, will use his amazing skills and advanced technology to get things right.
The game predominantly features side-scrolling action elements. Throughout the storyline, you’ll encounter points where you can choose the path directly. Regardless of the selection, all paths converge at the next chapter. Each decision leads to a distinct ending, and only a select few of these are considered successful, while the others lead to bad outcomes for Metropia and prompt the player with the message “Try Again.”
Phantom 2040 also places significant emphasis on exploration. Players must find the objective or exit in each area, with optional sections offering restoration kits or weapon upgrades. Some areas are locked by numbered gates, which can be opened by destroying the corresponding remote lock located elsewhere, and some locks can only be accessed via a secret underground network of sewer systems that connect all areas. Objectives in each area may involve finding a keycard, defeating a boss, or simply gaining access to the next area. Most areas can be revisited at any time once they are unlocked.
