Gameplay
In The Last Stand: Aftermath, players take on the role of a survivor in a post-apocalyptic world overrun by zombies, with the goal of exploring dangerous territories and uncovering the truth about the epidemic. Each new run requires the player to manage a series of resources and skills to prolong survival. The game retains some features from previous titles in the series, while adding several new mechanics that refresh the experience.
Controls and exploration
The game is optimized for controller use, which offers vibration feedback when detecting zombies, points of interest, or important items. During exploration, players need to find fuel to keep their vehicle running, allowing them to progress to new areas. The slow motion mechanic can be activated to identify points of interest, such as gas stations or loot areas, making navigation more strategic.
Infection and mutation system
The player’s character is constantly being consumed by the infection, which gradually reduces their maximum health. To slow this process, it is crucial to find and use antiviral shots, which not only partially heal the player but also temporarily stop the health loss. Without these shots, any damage inflicted by zombies affects the player’s maximum health. The infection can also lead to mutations, which grant beneficial abilities and are chosen every 15 points of damage.
Crafting and resource management
Crafting is an essential mechanic in The Last Stand: Aftermath, allowing players to create items like batteries, improvised silencers, melee weapons, bandages, and more. These items are vital for survival, as they can repair damaged weapons or create medical supplies. Batteries, in particular, are extremely valuable as they can be used at antiviral stations or to acquire other essential items.
Combat and strategy
Combat involves using both melee and ranged weapons, each with its own damage, weight, and durability stats. Players can carry multiple weapons, but excess weight can drain the character’s stamina, limiting actions. Firearms range from semi-automatic to burst or fully automatic, requiring players to adapt to the situation. Melee weapons, on the other hand, allow for stealthy attacks and are effective at removing zombie armor before taking them down.
Traps
In addition to dangerous enemies, the environment is filled with deadly traps that can be used strategically or avoided to keep the player alive. These include:
- Shotgun Trap – A homemade trap with a rigged shotgun, shooting a spread of buckshot at close range when triggered by a tripwire.
- Poison Trap – Devices that release a cloud of toxic gas when activated. This gas does not affect zombies but poisons humans.
- Explosive Trap – An improvised explosive that detonates when the tripwire is triggered.
- Decrepit Awning – Damaged awnings on city buildings that can collapse onto anyone walking through unstable doorways.
- Mine – Land mines left by HERC and the military that are triggered by proximity to living beings.
- Turret – Automated turrets that shoot at anything in sight, both human and zombie. They can be disabled with well-placed shots.
Progression and economy
The game features two types of currency: intelligence points and supply points. Intelligence points are used to permanently upgrade the survivors’ skills, while supply points are earned by killing zombies and looting areas. These points can be spent on weapons, ammunition, and special items.
Enemies and increasing difficulty
As the player progresses, zombies become faster, stronger, and more dangerous. Certain enemy types, such as explosive or venom-spitting zombies, require specific strategies, like using grenades or molotov cocktails to remove their armor or avoid fatal attacks. The game also introduces traps and hidden enemies, making exploration more tense and challenging.
About the game
The latest from veteran developer Con Artist Games, creators of The Last Stand series of games, The Last Stand: Aftermath is an all new, premium singleplayer standalone action adventure rogue-lite. Choose a survivor to set forth and explore the ruins of civilization, finding fuel to travel to new locations and gathering supplies to craft weapons and more.
It’s dangerous out there
You’ll need to stay on your toes, since hordes of zombies still roam the streets, and you’re no superhuman. In fact, you’re one of the infected yourself, and eventually you’ll die, be it from the hostile undead or the virus rampaging through your body. But when that happens, you’ll pick up the game again as a new survivor, with perks and upgrades earned based on your progress from the last, and set out to try again.
Plot
You are already dead.
The infection is inside you. Make your last stand beyond the wall. Find a better future for those you leave behind.
The game is set 15 years after the events of The Last Stand: Union City. Most of the world’s population has been wiped out by the zombie apocalypse. A compound called “The End” is the last bastion of hope in Union City. However, anyone who becomes infected or exposed to the zombie virus must be exiled, as per the community’s agreement that any infected individual must leave the compound.
The player takes control of these exiled characters, who must make their last stand in the wilderness, alone, while trying to improve things for the community they left behind. All characters eventually succumb to the infection or perish through other means.
