Thunder Blade [Master System]

Overview

Thunder Blade (サンダーブレード) is a challenging helicopter shoot ’em up developed by Sega and originally published to the arcades in 1987, and the version we have here, ready to play online in your browser (HTML5), it’s the Master System one, which was released in October 1988.

In Thunder Blade, you take control of a formidable technological helicopter named Gunship Gladiator, that resembles the aircraft from Blue Thunder, a 1983 film that ended up gaining a spin-off series of the same name the following year. The mission is to prevent the conclusion of a coup d’état that aims to install a dictator in power.

The player faces a large number of aerial and ground enemies, with the perspective changing depending on the point in the game: in some parts it is from above, others it is from behind the helicopter, something like Galaxy Force or After Burner. The helicopter’s arsenal has unlimited ammunition and consists of air-to-ground rockets and good old-fashioned cannon gunfire.

The arcade version made use of Sega’s 3D super scaler technology to create city environments where the buildings would appear to have depth. The subsequent home versions sadly lacked this feature.

You’re the Gunship Gladiator. You fly the Thunder Blade chopper. Some say you’re unstoppable. This mission will put you to the test!

The enemy has invaded your country. That makes you mad. So you’re going to stop them …all by yourself! In cities…over deserts and oceans…in caves and through refineries… you’re cutting loose with your cannons and dropping air-to-surface missiles from your skids.

They’ve got tanks, airpower and incredible super fortresses. But you haw guts, a taste for glory… and the meanest fightin’ copter in the sky!

• Pause – Enter
• Attention – These controls are default. Hover your mouse into the lower part of the screen and a control bar will show up. Click on the gamepad icon and redefine your the keys if you want.
