What went wrong with Dexter’s Laboratory

Overview

This video from the Steve Reviews channel investigates what went wrong with Dexter’s Laboratory, the once great cartoon series created by Genndy Tartakovsky for Cartoon Network as the first Cartoon Cartoon initially released in 1996.

This animated show follows Dexter, an enthusiastic boy-genius with a hidden science laboratory in his room which is full of inventions, which he keeps secret from his clueless parents, “Mom” and “Dad”. Dexter is at constant odds with his older and more extroverted sister Dee Dee, who always gains access to the lab and, lots of times, inadvertently foils his experiments. Dexter has a bitter rivalry with his neighbor and classmate Mandark, a nefarious boy-genius who attempts to undermine Dexter at every opportunity, and often takes part in superhero-like adventures with other characters.

The first two season of Dexter’s Laboratory were great, but the latter two are terrible, unwatchable. So, this video takes a look at the cartoon, analyzing at what initially made the animated series so great, and looking at the factors which lead to its downfall and eventual cancellation.
