Overview
Xexex (ゼクセクス), also known as Orius, is one of the most refined and visually impressive side-scrolling shoot ’em ups from the early nineties, combining the best of Gradius, R-Type and X Multiply, but with its own style and an unforgettable soundtrack. It was developed by Konami and released in 1991 initially to the arcades, but now we have its AAA version here set to be played online, in your browsers (HTML5), without the need to install anything!
In short, Xexex puts the players in control of the ship Flintlock with the mission to rescue Princess Irene in a universe full of biotechnological dangers, while exploring mechanics such as the use of Flint, an intelligent orb that attacks enemies autonomously — a clear inspiration from the “Force Device” from R-Type and the “Options” in Gradius. And yes, it supports both single-player and co-op for up to two players in the same device.
Despite its quality, Xexex had a short life outside of arcades, being ported only in 2007 on Salamander Portable for PSP (exclusive to Japan) and re-released in 2021 on Nintendo Switch and PlayStation 4. Still, it earned its place as a cult classic, winning awards for best graphics (above Virtua Racing) and best music (ahead of Metal Black) at the 1992 Gamest Awards.
